About Us

Global "Gurukul" of River Science

The Center for Krishna River Basin Management and Studies (cKrishna) is a Brain Trust dedicated to advancing River Science and River Basin Management. Established on February 28, 2024, through a collaboration between NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal, under the guidance of Ganga at IIT Kanpur, the center functions as a knowledge arm of the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD). 

cKrishna is focused on restoring and conserving the Krishna River and its resources by gathering and sharing knowledge, conducting research and development, planning, monitoring, educating, advocating, and engaging with stakeholders. A key initiative, the Condition Assessment and Management Plan (CAMP) for the Krishna River Basin, is a multidisciplinary effort that brings together three departments, faculty members, and numerous stakeholders from both state and central levels. The CAMP project stands as a testament to our collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change and make a lasting impact on the river basin.

Prospectus

The Centre for Krishna River Basin Management Studies is a collaborative initiative to address the critical environmental challenges facing the Krishna River Basin. We focus on promoting sustainable management and conservation practices across the states where the river flows. Established under a Memorandum of Agreement involving the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India (through the National River Conservation Directorate), IIT Kanpur, and a consortium of NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal, our mission is to develop holistic management plans to restore and maintain the ecological integrity of the Krishna River and its tributaries.

Mandate

The charter at the Centre for Krishna River Basin Management Studies outlines the core responsibilities and objectives of our consortium, which are:
• Developing the Krishna River Basin Management Plan.
• Ensuring effective implementation of the plan and its continuous adaptation through strategic interventions.
• Creating action plans that integrate environmental, social, and economic aspects with measurable outcomes to evaluate their impact on the river systems.
• Promoting inter-sectoral coordination for a holistic approach to river basin management.
• Encouraging stakeholder engagement and fostering an integrated river restoration and conservation approach.  

Mission

At the Centre for Krishna River Basin Management, our mission is to restore and sustain the ecological health and integrity of the River Basin while promoting the responsible management of its resources. We are committed to preserving the natural ecosystems of the river and its tributaries by ensuring continuous, clean water flows, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the socio-economic development of the region through sustainable practices.
